PSU Freebie High School Tournament
September 24-25, 2010
Hosted by Portland State University
We are pleased to announce the second annual free tournament at Portland State University. The tournament will provide 4 preliminary rounds of debate and 3 preliminary rounds of Individual Events, with breaks to finals. The tournament will be hosted at Portland State University with all rounds taking place in either Cramer Hall or Neuberger Hall.
Tournament Philosophy:
We know that tough economic times have put a strain on debate budgets for High Schools and Colleges alike in our state. We also know that students appreciate a low-pressure tournament early in the year to try out new material in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We seek to combine these elements, by offering a FREE tournament with a relaxed schedule. We are able to do this through the generosity of our volunteers and donations of rooms from our departments, and the desire of the PSU Debate Team to give back to the high school community, where many of us began our experiences in debate.
Thank you and we hope to see you all there!

Events:
All events with sufficient entries will have two divisions- novice and senior. Novice division is for competitors in their first year of competition. If we have to collapse the divisions, awards will still be given to the top performers in the novice division. Students may enter 1 debate event, and 2 individual events.
Debate: Cross-Examination, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Public Debate
Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum will be double-flighted. Cross-examination and Public Debate will be single-flighted. For Public Debate, topic areas will be announced Monday evening.
IEs: After Dinner Speaking, Duo Interpretation, ELL Interpretation, Expos, Extemp, Impromptu, Memorized Interpretation (Serious and Humorous), Oratory, Radio, Reading Interpretation (poetry and prose)
Entries: Please e-mail all entries to
psudebate@gmail.com by Monday, September 20th at 5 pm. Please include your
school name, contact information, students’ names, events, and whether
they should be in novice or senior division. Please also include the
names of judges, their availability, any events that they are
uncomfortable judging, or any other restrictions they have.
Please email any changes from the initial entry by Wednesday, September 23rd at 5 pm. At this time, we will send an email either confirming that your school has provided sufficient judge availabilities or be forced to drop entries until your provided judging accounts for your judging responsibility in full. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please let us know before the Wednesday deadline.
Judging: Because this tournament does not require entry fees, it is imperative that all entries are covered. Any entries that are not covered will result in entries being dropped from the tournament. 1 Judge will cover 2 CX or Public Debate entries or 4 LD, PF; and 6 individual event entries.
In order to accommodate teams that might not have enough available judges, we are allowing senior members of your team to judge in the novice division.
Food: The tournament will not be provided food. However, there is time built into the schedule for students, coaches, and judges to get lunch or snacks from any of the nearby restaurants. The Portland Farmer’s Market is also in the Park Blocks during the day on Saturday.
Tournament Location: The tournament will be centered
in Cramer Hall. This is also where postings will occur. All competition rooms
will be in either Cramer Hall or Neuberger Hall.
Hospitality: There will be a hospitality table with a tournament volunteer who can help you with finding rooms/buildings, recommending local restaurants, and available to assist with any questions or problems that arise during the tournament.
We will do our best to provide wireless internet access to participants who request it.
Awards: All finalists and top finishers will be recognized, and certificates will be presented.
If you have any questions, please email us at psudebate@gmail.com. You can also reach the debate team’s office at (503) 725-8283.
