University of Oregon
February 23, 2008
Called to order by Michael Curry
Aaron Donaldson – Graduate Students from U of O.
o Thanks for attending and please fill out a coach’s feedback. Some IE events were cut due to limited room space, however, they might be able to bring a few IE’s back, please rank in order of most importance to you.
o ODI – Oregon Debate Institute – Please encourage your students to attend. It’s close by and there are a lot of scholarships available. Scholarships are also transferable. However, there will be no policy offered this year. They will be offering a college prep portion to their camp this year for seniors heading to college who want to compete. Go to the U of O website for further information.
Officers Reports:
Michael Curry – OHSSL President
o If you have any rule change propositions they are due today. Please give them to Jan Pizzo. If you were not at the meeting please email them to Jan ASAP.
o There are some offices that need to be filled, because Rachael Leach is no longer with us, Jan Pizzo moves up to 1st V-President. Therefore we need to nominate for 2nd V-President (who will then move up to first) and then another to be 2nd V-President. In addition, we need someone for the protest committee, which is a three-year commitment. We also need someone to replace Ginny Hollingsworth-Clark for the OSAA activities committee, which meets once a quarter; this would be only a one-year commitment. Please send nominations to Michael Curry ASAP.
o We need to hear from the executive committee and district directors about the rules regarding the use of computers in round for LD, Policy and Public Forum. We will vote in April for the actual rule but we need some policy to operate for this year’s state tournament.
Jan Pizzo – 1st Vice-President
o Possible rule changes – See scanned attachments. Please give comments or suggestions directly to Jan Pizzo. The rules change committee will meet next week to make a voters packet. Remember these rules change will only apply to district and state competition, invitational can do what they want. However, for students to be able to qualify for the Proven Excellence the tournament must follow state rules.
o Ginny Hollingsworth-Clark presented a rule change to allow all paid voting members to vote for Forensics Educator of the year.
o Jane Berry-Eddings discussed the use of computers in rounds and for what kinds of debate. There was general discussion that followed regarding adopting the Texas guidelines, should they be modified, should we insist on a hard copy of evidence. Suggestions were made and Jane will use them to craft the actual rule change to be voted on at the state coaches meeting.
o Jan Pizzo is proposing the use of extemp tubs in the preparation room only for public debate.
o Jan Pizzo is proposing some rule changes for congress to put it more in line with NFL.
