I. First Semester Topics (in classroom at WAHS)

A. Body Structure and Function as it relates to disease; respiratory system, digestive system and nutrition, lymphatic system, circulatory system, endocrine system
B. Introduction to Medical Terminology and related communication skills
C. Health Care Systems
D. Personal Qualities of a Health Care Worker
E. Legal and Ethical Respohsibilities
F. Infection Control
G. Vital Signs
H. Laboratory Assistant Skills
I. Medical Assistant Skills
J. Nurse Assistant Skills
K. Physical Therapy Skills
L. First Aid/CPR
M. Health Careers

* For many of these topics we will have the services of a Registered Nurse to show proper technique. Examples of labs that will be done:

  • Physcial Exam Lab
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Lab
  • Sterile Technique Lab (proper way to put on sterile gloves, gowns, etc.)
  • Body Mechanics Lab (moving patients, performing range-of-motion exercises, bed making, walking with crutches, etc.)
  • Vital Signs Lab (measuring blood pressure, pulse, etc.)
  • Hematocrit and Blood Sugar Lab
  • Dental Exam Lab
  • Intake and Output and Urinalysis

* There will also be a Registered Nurse to teach the First Aid/CPR part of the course and you can earn a card for both.

II. Second Semester

Students will be visiting as many as 6 different sites to get an appreciation for the medical/nursing field. You will mostly be observing but, depending on the site, you may be able to get more involved.
